Match Manager Output File

Match Manager generates a file that you can open in your favorite spreadsheet program (Microsoft Excel, Open Office Calc, Google Sheets - anything that can open CSV files).  It combines all genealogy-relevant data from each of the following sites:

  • 23 and Me
  • Ancestry
  • Family Tree DNA
  • GedMatch Genesis
  • My Heritage

We do not collect the data used for the company’s internal use. These are generally meaningless for genealogy purposes.  Even though we eliminate each company’s internal data columns, the Match Manager file is still bursting with information!  Currently there are 89 columns in the MM result file.  Because each testing site has their own testing process and their own set of data which they report, we purposefully don't manipulate the data beyond standardizing a few columns:

  •          Match Test ID- Your DNA match’s ID # created by the testing company
  •          Match Name- Your DNA match’s name or alias created by the match
  •          Email – Your DNA match’s email address if provided
  •          Match Gender - Your DNA match’s gender if provided
  • We also add a few:
    •          Source Site– The website source for your DNA match
    •          Download Date– The date MM was run to download match results

Our goal is to just give you the raw data and let you analyze and manipulate it as you see fit.

When you look at the spreadsheet, you'll see a lot of empty cells.  This is because we leave space for the data reported from the different websites - not all sites report the same data.  Once you get beyond the first 6 columns, you'll notice that each column header begins with a prefix designating the site that column comes from:

    • 23_ = data from 23 & Me
    • an_ = data from Ancestry
    • gm_ = data from GedMatch Genesis
    • ft_ = data from Family Tree DNA (FTDNA)
    • mh_ = data from My Heritage

Each row in the spreadsheet represents one of your DNA matches from one testing site.  The columns for that testing site will have whatever data was provided for that match.   Not every column will be filled in for each match.  If the DNA match was from Family Tree DNA then the columns for that testing site (starting with ft_) will have whatever data was provided for that match from that site (though some will still be blank if the data was not provided by the user to FT DNA).  As you scan the columns for the rest of that row you’ll see that the other testing sites will be completely blank because this match is from FT DNA.

To help understand the data found in each column of the MM results file, here is a quick rundown of what is provided.  Note: We've abbreviated some repeated terms:

    • Site is the DNA testing company or GedMatch,
    • Match is the person who shows up on your DNA test results as a relative,
    • Test Subject is whoever's spit or cheek swab was collected and sent off to be tested.
    • The columns with company names in the description are provided by that company and not combined with data from any other testing company.

Currently, the download includes just core DNA data.  We have  plans for including additional data in the download (including ethnicity information, etc), but if you think we're missing something important, please let us know using the Contact link at the top of the page!
